Muhlenberg Miners & Music Festival

Come celebrate Muhlenberg County’s coal and music heritage in Paradise Park this Independence Day! This unique festival will feature guided tours of the UMWA Miners Hall Museum, the Thumbpicking Hall of Fame and Merle Travis Birthhouse.

While touring the various sites enjoy the sweet sounds of thumbpicking during a special edition of ‘Picking in the Park,’ that will include a ‘jam session’ for musicians of all ages and skill level.  So bring your lawn chairs and break out that guitar and join in on the fun!

To cap off a fun-filled day of music and history, make the short walk to the Merle Travis Music Center at 2:00 to hear Thom Bresh, son of Merle Travis, live in concert. Thom is an incredible musician and accomplished producer. He boasts three Top 10 Records, 1976’s “Homemade Love” and “Sad Country Love Song” and 1977’s “Hey Daisy.” He is a two-time Grammy nominated producer for “Travis PIckin” by Merle Travis and “Wires in the Wood” by Thom Bresh. If that’s not enough, Thom is also an Academy Award nominated producer for “Over You” by Lane Brody from the movie Tender Mercies. Thom has also appeared on numerous television shows ranging from the Barbara Mandrell Show to the People’s Choice Awards to being featured on two HBO specials with Rich Little, just to name a few.

The festival including the Thom Bresh concert is completely FREE and everyone is invited to attend. Concessions will be available on site from Brothers Bar-B-Q!
