Get Mooned in Greenville – 2017 Great American Eclipse Activities

16Aug

Greenville, KY – “Get Mooned in Greenville” via the “2017 Great American Eclipse”! On August 21, 2017, millions of people across the United States will see nature’s most wondrous spectacle — a total eclipse of the sun. It is a scene of unimaginable beauty; the moon completely blocks the sun, daytime becomes a deep twilight, and the sun’s corona shimmers in the darkened sky. In Greenville, KY, this once-in-a-lifetime solar eclipse is taking place at approximately 1:25 pm. Greenville is blessed to be in “the path of totality” and the Greenville Tourism Commission is hosting two very exciting community events to celebrate!

To kick-off the eclipse activities in Greenville, experience a tethered balloon ride at the “Fly Me to the Moon” Hot Air Balloon Show and Glow! The balloon event will take place on Saturday, August 19th at the Muhlenberg County Park located behind the West Campus of Muhlenberg County High School at 501 West Everly Brothers Blvd. This balloon show and glow is being hosted in conjunction with the Muhlenberg County High School (MCHS) Marching Mustang Band Annual Ice Cream Supper!

Tethered hot air balloon ticket sales begin at 5:30 pm with rides beginning at 7:00 pm and continuing until 8:30 pm. The cost is $5 per person to ride and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the MCHS Marching Mustang Band!

It is important to note that tethered balloon rides are contingent upon weather conditions and put-through time availability. First-come-first-serve ticket sales will begin onsite at 5:30 pm. One ticket = one person for one ride. Weather conditions can quickly change. A ticket does not guarantee a ride. If a ticket holder is not allowed to ride due to weather conditions or put-through timing, a full refund of the purchase price will be awarded. While there is no minimum age for children to ride, every child under the age of 12 requires adult companionship. Following the conclusion of the tethered rides, a beautiful “hot air balloon glow” is set for 8:30 pm.

Tethered hot air balloon rides and homemade ice cream promise to make for a memorable eclipse weekend experience! The Ice Cream Supper gates open at 5:00 pm at MCHS Mustang Stadium located on the West Campus. The band boosters will be serving ribeye sandwiches, BBQ sandwiches, walking tacos, cheeseburgers, hamburgers, hot dogs, a variety of chips and candy bars, snow cones, lemon shake-ups and of course homemade ice cream! Plus, all food sale proceeds benefit the band! Bounce houses and inflatables will be available for the kids to enjoy. The MCHS Band will also be previewing their 2017 show at 6:00 and 8:00 pm called “Color and Light.”

Then on eclipse day, Monday August 21st, come celebrate this beautiful celestial event at the Greenville Tourism Commission’s “See it at the Summerhouse Eclipse Viewing Extravaganza”! The event begins at 10 am and the first 500 guests will receive complimentary “Eclipse Survival Kits” which include a Moon Pie dessert cake, a Sundrop soft drink, a commemorative mini-frisbee, eclipse viewing glasses and sunscreen!

Additionally, while supplies last, 2,000 FREE commemorative “I Got Mooned in Greenville” American Paper Optics manufactured eclipse viewing glasses will be available! The Summerhouse is the beautiful white gazebo structure located two blocks east of the downtown square on East Main Cross Street. It will provide the perfect viewing location with wide open grassy spaces for lawn chairs and blankets. In addition, it is conveniently located adjacent to the Morgan Memorial Park (A.K.A. Greenville City Park) accommodating any overflow guests. Food trucks will be on site, plus the WBKR Radio Roadshow with Barb Birgy will be broadcasting live from the Summerhouse!

In Greenville, the eclipse itself will begin just before 12:00 pm with complete darkness occurring at approximately 1:25 pm for 1 minute and 44 seconds, then finishing up around 3:00 pm once the moon moves completely past the sun.
