Greenville, Ky. – “HEADS UP!” Greenville, Kentucky’s 9th annual “Saturdays on the Square” free summer concert series will kick off Saturday, June 24, 2017. This year’s line-up features six exceptional musical events. From regional talents to internationally known performers, the 2017 outdoor series will deliver a new level of entertainment and fresh excitement to downtown Greenville.
In “Saturdays on the Square” traditional fashion, Main Street in historic downtown will transform into a premier outdoor concert venue with the beautiful Muhlenberg County courthouse providing the jaw-dropping backdrop for each concert. During the six-week series, free musical performances will begin at 8pm Central Time on Saturday nights June 24 – July 29. Everyone is invited! Attendees are encouraged to come early, set up lawn chairs, explore downtown and enjoy a pre-show dinner at a Greenville restaurant.
Aaron Tippin, known as “The Hardest Workin’ Man in Country Music”, opens the season June 24th. During his 25+ year music career, Aaron Tippin has charted more than 30 songs on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts. Three of those songs went to number one: “There Ain’t Nothin’ Wrong with the Radio”, “That’s as Close as I’ll get to Loving You” and “Kiss This.” His other Top 10 hits include “You’ve Got to Stand for Something”, “Working Man’s Ph.D”, “Where the Stars and Stripes and the Eagle Fly” and many others. In addition, this season-opening concert will pay tribute to the Armed Services and Veterans with a special “Military Salute.” Current Service Members and Veterans of all military branches and their families are encouraged to attend. To help set the stage, military equipment will be on display and, while supplies last, free American flags will be distributed to the crowd. This kick-off concert, featuring an intimate acoustic set with Aaron Tippin partnered with a military salute, will be the most meaningful opening event of any past season.
Saturday, July 1st will feature the “Blues Brothers Revue”, the only duo in North America sanctioned by Dan Aykroyd and Judith Belushi to wear the infamous hats and sunglasses and walk in the legendary footsteps of Jake and Elwood Blues. Discovered in Las Vegas, performers Wayne Catania and Kieron Lafferty capture the infectious humor and engaging spirit of the Blues Brothers like no one since Belushi and Aykroyd. Backed by a powerhouse band, they’ll deliver a performance to remember, packed with classic hits from the Blues Brothers catalog, including Soul Man, Rubber Biscuit, Sweet Home Chicago, and more. For a night of laughter, dancing and musical fun, be sure to catch Blues Brothers Revue at Saturdays on the Square on July 1st.
Saturday, July 8th is the “Twilight Antique Car Show & Cruise-In”. The event begins at 5:00 pm and is the premier vintage automobile showcase for Greenville, typically attracting over 75+ antique cars from around the region. The combination of antique cars and the historic vibe of downtown creates an incredibly nostalgic atmosphere that only happens once a year. In conjunction with the car show event, back by popular demand, the 8pm “Saturdays on the Square” concert will feature “The Downtown Band” from Nashville, Tenn. This band rocked the square in 2016 and earned the only repeat performance invitation for 2017. The band line-up will once again feature special guest lead singer Jordan Phillips and a ten-piece band with a full brass section. Expect a dynamic musical performance featuring dance tunes and recognizable favorite oldies hits from across the decades! The band has been voted “Best Live Band in Tennessee” & “Top 10 Best Live Band” in the US for three consecutive years by The Industry Expert Awards. Guest lead singer, Jordan Phillips is a critically acclaimed (New York Times, Huffington Post) international touring vocalist for over five years. He has shared the stage with John Mayer, Kings of Leon, Faith Hill and Three Doors Down in addition to over three dozen network television shows and movie appearances. July 8th will be a perfect opportunity to dance the night away!
On July 15th, “Saturdays on the Square” will be hosting a very special “Kentucky Talent Showcase & 225th Birthday Celebration”! The talent showcase will be produced liken to a cruise ship variety show and will feature a performance line-up that will celebrate the art of guitar thumbpicking, KY bluegrass and more. With a “Music from the Generations” theme, the stage will host local artists such as 2-Time National Thumbpicking Hall of Fame “Thumbpicker of the Year” and current NTHF Executive Director Joe Hudson and Muhlenberg County native Zeke Walters of “Walters Miller Band”. The variety show will also introduce other perhaps “undiscovered” local and regional musicians that will bring a sense of hometown pride and crowd-pleasing performances.
In conjunction with the July 15th Kentucky Talent Showcase, “Saturdays on the Square” will celebrate the 225th birthday of Kentucky as the 15th state to join the Union. In a joint resolution that passed earlier this year, communities across KY, along with State Officials from across The Commonwealth and designees from KY State Departments, are commemorating this milestone event. The celebration will include a special rendition of “My Old Kentucky Home” and other classic KY tunes, commemorative “KY 225” giveaways, a “Happy Birthday” sing-a-long and cupcakes! This will be the night to experience Kentucky’s unbridled spirit.
July 22nd is reserved for the annual “Saturdays on the Square – Gospel Night”. This year, Greenville will welcome a legendary member of the Gaither Vocal Band, David Phelps. Phelps has spent the greater part of the last two decades singing with the Gaithers, a role that has taken his voice to Carnegie Hall, the White House and countless halls and churches around the world. He is credited among today’s most spectacular voices due to his seemingly endless vocal range, which extends more than three octaves, uniquely partnered with his gift for communicating in song. As a member of the Gaither Vocal Band, Phelps has received Dove Awards, Grammy Awards and multiple platinum-selling projects. 2017 marks a new phase for the artist as he departs the Gaither Vocal Band to focus on his solo career and other exciting new projects. His newest recording, ‘Hymnal: A Journey of Faith through Hymns’, was released on March 24th and debuted at #1 on the Southern Gospel chart and #5 on the CCM charts. This new critically acclaimed project will take the “Saturdays on the Square” stage in Greenville on July 22nd and will be accompanied by a large community-based choir comprised of several of Muhlenberg County churches’ choir members. Prepare for an incredible night of praise and worship!
The 2017 free summer concert series will wrap-up on July 29th with the musical stunner “Natural Wonder: The Ultimate Stevie Wonder Experience”. While Stevie Wonder impersonators dot the landscape backing tracks in hand, “Natural Wonder” rolls into town with the full band experience, complete with a crack rhythm section, full horn ensemble, and the formidable Gabriel Bello, a Billboard-ranked vocalist and multi-instrumentalist; they channel the energy and artistry that has made Stevie Wonder an icon across decades and genres. Since its inception in 2012, Natural Wonder has wowed audiences in numerous festivals, private/corporate events and large venues across the country including The House of Blues (Orlando and Myrtle Beach), B.B. Kings (New York City), The Fillmore (Charlotte, NC), The Downtown Cabaret (Bridgeport, CT), and Speaking Rock Casino, (El Paso, TX) to name a few. “Natural Wonder” will be the “icing on the cake” to cap off another fabulous season of “Saturdays on the Square”!
